A mountain gorilla trek can take anywhere from two to seven hours depending on the location of the gorilla family on that specific day. Mountain gorillas tend to move very deep into the forests during the dry seasons in search of food making tracking them longer than anticipated.

Although mountain gorilla tracking in the wet seasons comes with steep, muddy, and physically challenging trails, it takes relatively less time to encounter them as they are often found within or just close to their habitats.

Once the gorillas are encountered, you will spend one hour observing them interact, groom, feed, going about their daily routines. Mountain gorillas are often tracked early in the morning because they are more active during this time offering you a clear picture of their wildlife.

Volcanoes National Park is home to 10 habituated gorilla families with the popular ones including Susa Group, Amahoro Group, and Hirwa Group. Each family has its unique traits and is led by a dominant silverback gorilla. Encountering a silverback gorilla in its natural habitat is one of the major highlights of gorilla trekking adventures.
