Kigali Nightlife: Best Bars, Rooftop Lounges and Night Clubs
Kigali nightlife is relaxed, safe and centred on rooftop bars, lounges and a handful of night clubs. The busiest areas are Kimihurura, Nyarutarama and Kacyiru, and popular spots include Riders Lounge at Kigali Heights, Sundowner, Choma’D, K Club, Envy and Cadillac Night Club. Bars and clubs generally close by about 1 a.m. on weeknights and 2 a.m. at weekends, so nights out in Kigali start earlier than in Kampala or Nairobi.
The evening usually begins around sunset with drinks and grilled brochettes, moves to a lounge or live music venue, and ends at a club for those who want to dance. Kigali is one of Africa’s safest capitals, which makes it an easy city to go out in, even for first-time visitors.
This guide covers the best bars, rooftop lounges and night clubs in Kigali, live music and events, the main nightlife neighbourhoods, and practical tips on closing times, transport, prices and safety.

Best Rooftop Bars and Lounges in Kigali
Kigali is built on hills, so its rooftop bars and lounges have some of the best night views in East Africa. Most open in the late afternoon and are busiest from sunset onwards.
Riders Lounge, Kigali Heights
Riders Lounge sits in the Kigali Heights complex, looking across to the lit-up dome of the Kigali Convention Centre. It mixes a laid-back early evening with DJs and a livelier crowd later on, which makes it a good one-stop venue if you only have one night.
Sundowner, Kimihurura
As the name suggests, Sundowner is a favourite for drinks as the sun sets over the hills. It serves grills and cold drinks in a relaxed setting and is an easy place to start a night in Kimihurura.
Crystal Lounge, City Centre
Crystal Lounge is a rooftop restaurant and bar on the eighth floor of the KABC building in central Kigali. It is known for grilled food and wide views over downtown.
Sky Lounge, City Centre
Sky Lounge is a rooftop bar with a good drinks menu and night views across the city centre.
Blackstone Lounge, City Centre
Blackstone Lounge in the Kigali Business Centre is one of the city’s more upscale lounges, with attentive service and a smart crowd. It is a popular first stop on Kigali nightlife tours.
Hotel Bars
Kigali’s big hotels are safe, comfortable choices for a quieter evening. The Kigali Marriott Hotel hosts live music on Friday nights, and the Kigali Serena Hotel runs wine and jazz evenings. The Ubumwe Grande Hotel’s bar is pricey but has one of the best views in the city.
Best Night Clubs in Kigali
Kigali’s night clubs play a mix of Afrobeats, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, hip-hop and international hits. Most open from Tuesday or Wednesday to Sunday and are busiest on Friday and Saturday nights. Many charge an entry fee, often around RWF 5,000 to 10,000, and some clubs require a minimum bottle spend for tables.
K Club, Nyarutarama
K Club, at KL House in Nyarutarama, has been one of Kigali’s best-known clubs for years. It is known for theme nights, good DJs, visiting artists and a fashionable crowd.
Envy, Kimihurura
Envy, next to Papyrus in Kimihurura, is one of the city’s most popular clubs, with a sleek interior, themed events and a lively, international crowd.
Cadillac Night Club
Cadillac is one of Kigali’s more upmarket clubs, with well-managed lighting and sound and a classy atmosphere. Expect an entry fee and higher drink prices, and note that it can be quiet early in the night.
Other Popular Clubs and Dance Venues
Other names to look out for include People Bar and Dance Venue in Kacyiru and Rosty Club. Ask your hotel or driver which club is busiest that week, because the crowd moves between venues.
Casual Bars and Local Spots in Kigali
Not every night needs a dance floor. These places suit a relaxed evening of food, drinks and conversation.
- Choma’D, Nyarutarama: a stylish restaurant and bar known for some of the best cocktails in Kigali and busy happy hours, often buy-one-get-one-free on Thursdays and Fridays.
- Executive Car Wash, Kimihurura: a bar set in a working car wash, loved for its brochettes, cold beer and lively local crowd. One of the best places to meet Rwandans on a night out.
- Shooters Lounge, Kimihurura: grilled nyama choma, drinks and DJs in a casual setting.
- Repub Lounge, Kimihurura: a popular lounge for food, drinks and music on the same strip as Shooters.
For the most local experience, look for a quartier boutique, a small neighbourhood bar where Kigali residents meet after work from about 4 p.m. Order a local beer such as Primus, Mützig or Skol, and a plate of brochettes. Practical Tips for a Night Out in Kigali
Closing Times
Rwanda sets closing hours for bars, clubs and entertainment venues, generally around 1 a.m. on weeknights and 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The government sometimes extends hours for special events: during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, venues were allowed to stay open until 3 a.m. on weeknights and 4 a.m. at weekends. Plan to start your evening earlier than you might at home.
Kigali also has strict noise rules, so many venues keep music at a moderate volume and live music often ends earlier than in neighbouring capitals.
Getting Around at Night
- Ride-hailing apps: Bolt, Move and Yego Cabs all operate in Kigali. You can also order a Yego cab by calling 9191 from a Rwandan number.
- Hotel or tour driver: the easiest option for visitors. Ask your hotel to book a trusted driver for the evening.
- Moto-taxis: quick and cheap, and drivers carry a helmet for passengers. Agree the fare first, and avoid them after a few drinks.
Kigali is very walkable by day, but take a car rather than walking alone late at night. Read more about how to get around Rwanda.
Prices and Paying
Kigali is affordable by international standards. A local beer in a neighbourhood bar costs far less than a cocktail at a rooftop lounge, and clubs charge entry fees on busy nights. Mobile money, especially MTN MoMo, is accepted almost everywhere, and most upmarket venues take cards. Carry some Rwandan francs for small bars and moto fares. See whether you can use euros in Rwanda.
Dress Code
Kigali nightlife is smart-casual. Upscale lounges and clubs may refuse entry to anyone in sportswear, flip-flops or shorts, so dress up a little for the bigger venues.
Safety
Kigali is widely considered one of the safest capital cities in Africa, with a visible police presence and low street crime. Normal precautions still apply: keep an eye on your drink, carry only what you need, and use trusted transport. Read how safe Rwanda is for tourists.
Etiquette and Local Rules
- Be polite and patient. Rwandans value calm, respectful behaviour, and loud or aggressive conduct is frowned upon.
- No plastic bags. Rwanda bans single-use plastic bags.
- Respect Kwibuka. From 7 April, Rwanda commemorates the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. During the first week, nightclubs close and public entertainment is restricted. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial to understand why.
- Umuganda Saturdays. On the last Saturday of each month, community work takes place in the morning and many businesses open later.
- Learn a few words. “Murakoze” means thank you. See our words to know on your Rwanda safari.
