Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Gorilla Trekking is an adventurous wild activity where tourists hike through the dense tropical rain forests to encounter the endangered mountain Gorillas.

Bwindi forest is the leading destination for encountering mountain gorillas in the entire world holding approximately 460 individual mountain gorillas reserved in different sectors of the park which includes Rushaga, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Buhoma with each one of them offering a different gorilla trekking adventurous experience.

Rushaga sector found in the southern regions is the leading, holding the large number of gorilla families, that’s 5 families with each family documented to have at least 30 individual gorillas.

The Buhoma sector is the easiest sector to be tracked, making it very convenient for elderly and disabled tourists, located north of the park.

Nkuringo sector holds 3 gorilla families, it is featured with high altitudes making it very hard to track and the Ruhija sector is home to 4 gorilla families located in the eastern regions of the park.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Gorilla Trekking  Experience 

At the park headquarters, you get briefed by a park ranger, sharing information about your way of conduct on encountering the gorillas, gorilla behavior, park rules, and guidelines to follow while tracking. You are then divided into 8 groups with each assigned to a specific gorilla family.

On your way to track, you are accompanied by a porter to help carry the tracking gear, an armed military for defense, and experienced or well-trained guides. inside the dense forests you go, moving up and down trying to locate your assigned gorilla family.

But most times for fast-tracking, a team of park rangers goes earlier into the gorilla habitats to locate them, and then it shares information with your guide about where they are enabling you to trail through with ease to meet It.

You can hike for hours or minutes depending on how fast you have found the gorilla family. But most Take 1 hour to observe it and do enough photography as you wish.

Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Permit costs.

A Bwindi gorilla trekking permit costs USD 800, issued by the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) in Kampala.  The permits are always in high demand usually during the peak travel seasons and hence can get sold out therefore one has to plan for a trekking adventure in Bwindi smartly by booking in advance to secure the permit.

  1. Do not wander off from the team while tracking without the consent of your guides.   2. Mind your body language in the presence of mountain gorillas as they perceive different body signs in a very different way hence try not to panic or run off in case it comes in close contact with you to prevent being harmed just in case.
  3. It is prohibited to smoke, drink, or eat at a close distance from these species before their curiosity draws them very close to you which is not safe.
  4. Avoid touching them because you never know how they might perceive it. It might be in a negative way leading to a serious attack.
  5. It is not allowed to use flash photography while in their habitats and mind as well about your movements while doing photography.
  6. In case you want to ease yourself, dig a deep hole, dispose of and cover it very well to avoid the spreading of infections in the gorilla habitats.

They are assigned close gorilla families taking them a few minutes to allocate them and are helped by porters and park guides to achieve their dream goal of encountering the endangered mountain gorillas.

Why are children below 15 years of age denied a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda?

  • Children’s behavioral manner is unpredictable.  Though you have tried briefing them, telling them how to conduct themselves especially when they have encountered a gorilla, they might end up doing the opposite which might expose them to harm.
  • Children below the age of 15 are most likely to be carriers or to be suffering from communicable diseases such as cough, flu, and chick pox which can be affected to these wildlife species exposing their lives to death.  Adults suffering from any of these diseases are also not allowed access to gorilla habitats.
  • Children might easily wander off unnoticed drawing themselves to danger zones of the forests hence exposing their lives to danger.

How to get to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in Kisoro District, Southwestern regions of Uganda along the D.R Congo border next to Virunga National Park. Bwindi Forests is 502.5km from Kampala city on the road, a 10hr 2min drive via Kabale – Mbarara Road.

Bwindi’s impenetrable national park can easily be accessed using a chartered Aircraft from Entebbe Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to Kisoro Airstrip taking you only 2 hours.

On road transport, Bwindi forests can also be easily accessible through Kigali taking you only 4hrs using a 4×4 wheel drive on the road to access the park.
