In Uganda, golden monkey trekking is conducted in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. In Rwanda, it takes place in Volcanoes National Park, while in Congo, it is available in Virunga National Park.

Golden monkeys are social primates that live in troops ranging from about 30 to 100 individuals. They prefer inhabiting bamboo forests, which are primarily found on the lower mountain slopes. Because of the nature if their natural habitats, their diet consists of mainly bamboo shoots, fruits, and leaves.

Golden monkeys are highly active and playful primates, making them fascinating to watch as they go about their daily activities in their natural habitats.

They are listed among the endangered species with about 4,000 individuals left in the wild of Africa. This is due to the threat of poaching for bush meat and pet trade and habitat loss from human encroachment for agriculture and settlement.

Where is the best place to see Golden Monkeys in Africa?

As mentioned earlier, golden monkey trekking is only possible in three countries in Africa: Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. These countries offer exceptional opportunities to encounter these fascinating primates in their natural habitats, each providing a unique experience. Let’s briefly explore each country.

Golden Monkeys in Rwanda

In Rwanda, golden monkeys are primarily sighted and tracked at Volcanoes National Park, where they are one of the most sought-after attractions after the famous mountain gorillas.

Nestled in the Virunga Mountains, Volcanoes National Park provides a perfect habitat for these endangered primates due to the abundance of bamboo shoots that make up a significant part of their diet.

The park is home to two habituated golden monkey troops, with the largest troop consisting of over 100 individuals. This group resides around the slopes of Mount Sabyinyo and is the most preferred troop for tracking.

In Rwanda, a small group of golden monkeys can also be found in the Gishwati Forest Reserve and Nyungwe Forest National Park, but they are not open for tracking as they are not habituated.

A golden monkey trekking adventure in Volcanoes National Park is a unique and thrilling experience that takes you on guided treks through bamboo forests to encounter these primates in their natural habitats.

The trek begins with a briefing from an experienced and knowledgeable guide at the park headquarters, covering what to expect, safety rules, and guidelines to follow while in the habitats.

Visitors are then accompanied by an armed ranger for safety, a porter to assist with carrying trekking gear, and a guide to provide an informative and enjoyable experience on the trails leading to the golden monkey habitats.

A standard golden monkey trek lasts about 2 to 4 hours, depending on the location of the monkeys, including the standard 1 hour of observation.

Golden Monkeys in Uganda

In Uganda, these vibrant and lively primates are sighted at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, which is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area.

The park’s bamboo forests, thriving in its cooler and elevated areas, provide an excellent habitat for these endangered primates. The park is home to three golden monkey troops, with two open for golden monkey trekking adventures and one for the golden monkey habituation experience.

Both the golden monkey trekking and habituation experiences offer unique opportunities to encounter these fascinating creatures in their natural habitats.

The golden monkey trekking experience provides a standard 1 hour of observation, while the habituation experience offers 4 hours of observation, allowing for a more immersive experience.

In addition to the observation offered during golden monkey trekking, the habituation experience provides deeper insights into the lives of these primates.

It is often conducted in the presence of researchers and scientists, enabling visitors to gain a better understanding of the primates’ behavior and have their questions answered.

Golden Monkeys in Congo

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, golden monkeys are sighted at Virunga National Park and Kahuzi-Biéga National Park. There are approximately 2 to 3 golden monkey troops found in Congo, but these are not fully open for trekking activities due to the ongoing insecurities in the country, particularly in these regions.

The park management is cautious about exposing visitors to potential dangers from rebel groups that occasionally reside in these forests.
